Greater Manchester Humanists talk 2013

16 July 2013
Manchester, UK
Maryam Namazie will be speaking at a meeting organised by Greater Manchester Humanists during 18:30 to 19:45 at Friends Meeting House, 6 Mount St., Manchester M2 5NS. For more information, click here. Free entry.

Maryam Namazie is the leading figure in the Council of Ex-Muslims, the One Law for All campaign and Fitnah (Movement for Islamic Women’s Liberation). She is a powerful and radical speaker.

She will describe how freedom of expression is key in opposing Sharia law and repression by Islamists. Freedom of expression is crucial to protect criticism of religion and that which is deemed to be taboo and sacred.

She says that ‘many still consider the exercise of free expression and a criticism of Sharia and Islamism as a form of racism and Islamophobia’, but that this wrong. ‘In fact isn’t it racist to deem whole groups of people worthy of lesser rights?’

She castigates the application of discriminatory Sharia laws on people because of their background or ‘community’.

Maryam will be introduced by Behzad Vorpushti, one of the Northern ex Muslims meetup organisers and the meeting will be chaired by Guy Otten, Chair of Greater Manchester Humanists.

Maryam will speak for 30 minutes and this will be followed by 45 mins questions and discussion.

There is no charge for this meeting but a collection will be taken up for the work of the Council of Ex Muslims
