When will we finish with the damn mosques

An engineer in charge of a project to create gardens around a mosque in Abu Dhabi lost his temper during a meeting because the project was progressing slowly. He was reported to the police by his colleagues as saying: ‘When will we finish with the damn mosques?’. The poor man was sentenced to one month in prison and is appealing the decision.

For readers who like Sharia, this will be yet another example of its glory – at least his head wasn’t chopped off.

And for those who insist that mentioning mosques on their own is discriminatory against one religious group, let me add, ‘when will we finish with the damn mosques, churches and synagogues’ if only to protect their tender sensibilities…

    As a lifelong humanist of 85, I am sure that the wisest thing to do would be to organise the meeting again, for a new date, and at the same time obtain assurance from the local police force that there will be a police presence at the meeting prepared to take action if any threat is made again.If no such assurance can be obtained from the police, cancel the meeting, but report the matter to the local MP.

    Is it really freethought when we allow trolls to distract us with their hate speech? Should we continue to have a completely unmoderated discussion or should we institute some criteria ā€“ that hatred expressed against a particular group of people is unacceptable and will not be allowed?

    I know that the principle of unrestricted free-speech is an ideal we would not willingly abandon, but hate trolls do divert us from having meaningful and thoughtful discussion of the issues Maryam raises. This eejut serves only to raise our hackles and has the practical effect of suppressing our own right of free speech if only by diverting us to tell it to fuck off. It has been here before under different pseudonyms. At first it was mildly amusing to work out what strange world view it possesses. Now it is nothing but an irritation and needs to be squashed like a mosquito.

    To moderate or not, what do you think, friends?

        That person needs to be ignored. He/she has been told to fuck off, but he/she hasn’t taken heed.

        Now we should try to ignore them and not respond to any of their future posts.

        How could they keep on posting when there is no response?

          This is an excerpt from ‘Urban Dictionary’ on trolling. It’s rather interesting Rafiq.

          ‘Trolling is trying to get a rise out of someone. Forcing them to respond to you, either through wise-crackery, posting incorrect information, asking blatantly stupid questions, or other foolishness. However, trolling statements are never true or are ever meant to be construed as such.

          Just as bad as trolling is “Feeding the Trolls”. This is when people say stuff that they know will prompt someone to respond with a trolled reply and/or replying to comments that are blatantly from a troll. This is especially true when a troll first makes his comment/reply, and (usually many) people respond, either trying to correct the troll, or express anger at the statement. At that point, the trolling was successful and has been fed. When encouraged by success and feeding, trolls often return.

        Muslims are people who have all types amongst them just as Americans or Christians or whoever. Anyway they are not one homogeneous group. My fight is with Islamists as should be yours not Muslims.

          I agree, Maryam, as you know from what I said before- religion is not resticted to one ethnic group of people. Mythical stories appeal to a wide range of people. The stories themselves are harmless, but rather it is what people do with those stories that make them a menace to modern society.

            Hard to describe what muslims are because there’s no such thing as a group/community of people who are the same, just like it is hard to describe what Welsh people are.

            There are so very many different muslims – and Welsh – people. Some may be orthodox, some liberal, some pro-feminism, some gay, some vote conservative some vote liberal.

            The only thing that binds them is that they practice Islam. That’s about it really.

            Islamists however are ultra-violent, far-right fascists who seek to impose their world view on everybody, by any means neccesary. Even on Muslims.

    I don’t get how saying, “When will we finish with the damn mosques” is offensive or even a criminal offence. Sometimes I think it is really lame what people get thrown in jail for in Islamic countries.

      I just mentioned this to my older son and that I think it is really stupid what some people get thrown in jail for in Islamic countries and he replied, “Welcome to Islam. Grab your head and get the f*** out.” šŸ˜† Of course, I told him this man is lucky, in that he didn’t lose any body part, but is just in jail.

    Meanwhile, there was a discussion of sharia scheduled at UCL tonight and it was disrupted because “someone came into the lecture room, took pictures from everyone inside and said that those ppl attending the talk will be ‘hunt down’ in case something wrong would be said. But please double check with the organizer. Police was informed and we were kindly asked to leave the building…”
