As I have said on many an occassion, the veil – socially speaking is never a choice.

Lest anyone forget, Hojatolislam Gholam Reza Hassani said: “women who do not respect the hijab and their husbands deserve to die.” Hassani, who leads Friday prayers in the city of Urumieh, in Iranian Azerbaijan said “I do not understand how these women who do not respect the hijab, 28 years after the birth of the Islamic Republic, are still alive.” He is the representative of the Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in eastern Azerbaijan.

  1. Obviously, wearing veil is not a question of one’s own choice where most of the social relations are formalized with religious beliefs that sprang from the political realm of the 7th century Arabian Peninsula.Converting it to an object of free choice is at the same time interrupting its function as a political signifier by removing the relations which have been signified by veil. Therefore, veil must be transformed to its essential being, i.e to an article of clothing to occupy a place in the field of our choices. From my point of view, I don’t give a shit if people wear veil or stroll around stark naked, as long as the condition above is ensured. But here, we are dealing with a persecution against women on behalf of the political interests. Meanwhile, speaking of pure logic and masculine wonder, now I am really wondering the dimensions of the imaginative libido behind this logic.

  2. Hijab Shijab…. its ones own choice although on pure logic it defeats its own purpose. As it is meant to keep prying eyes away…the hijab actually makes most men wonder even more ;)great Blog 🙂
