On 8 March 2012 International Women’s Day, the Nude Photo Revolutionaries Calendar was launched in homage to Egyptian atheist, student and blogger Aliaa Magda Elmahdy who posted a nude photo of herself, announcing the post on Twitter under the hashtag, #NudePhotoRevolutionary.

The calendar is the idea of campaigner Maryam Namazie to support Aliaa Magda Elmahdy and join her ‘screams against a society of violence, racism, sexism, sexual harassment and hypocrisy’.

Namazie says: ‘What with Islamism and the religious right being obsessed with women’s bodies and demanding that we be veiled, bound, and gagged, nudity breaks taboos and is an important form of resistance.’

The calendar is designed by SlutWalk Co-founder Toronto, Sonya JF Barnett who says: ‘I felt that women needed to stand in solidarity with Aliaa. It takes a lot of guts to do what she did, and the backlash is always expected and can quite hurtful. She needed to know that there are others like her, willing to push the envelope to express outrage.’

Others who join the ‘scream’ include mother and daughter Anne Baker and Poppy Wilson St James, teacher Luisa Batista, We are Atheism Founder Amanda Brown, atheist bloggers Greta Christina and Emily Dietle, FEMEN activist Alena Magelat, photographer Mallorie Nasrallah, actress Cleo Powell, freethinker Nina Sankari , writer Saskia Vogel, and mother Maja Wolna. The women are photographed by Julian Baker, Adam Brown, Grzegorz Brzezicki, Lucy Fox-Bohan, Agnieszka Hodowana, Ben Hopper, N. Maxwell Lander, Mallorie Nasrallah, Mark Neurdenburg, Vitaliy Pavlenko, and Michael Rosen.

On nudity and the calendar, Mallorie Nasrallah says: ‘When a tool of oppression can be turned in to an assertion of power, it is a beautiful thing. Nudity when celebrated harms no one, and when made shameful and barbaric harms everyone.’ Nina Sankari says: ‘In solidarity with Aliaa Magda Elmahdy, I would like to stress that our bodies (and thoughts) belong to us and to nobody else.’ Anne Baker says ‘Men in frocks constrain, control and intimidate women the world over in the name of God … it has to stop.’ Greta Christina says: ‘Sexual freedom is an important freedom — but it’s one that commonly gets ignored or trivialized.’ Maja Wolna says: ‘Irrespective of sex, sexual orientation, religion or culture we are equal. Personal dignity is a foundation of human civilization.’ Amanda Brown says: ‘Dogma will never determine where I sit, what I wear, or how I live’ and Poppy Wilson St. James says: ‘I find it strange that it is more acceptable to see on screen violence and guns than even a nipple. There is something wrong with our mindset if that is what we accept as the norm and shy away from nudity which is a completely natural state’.

Saskia Vogel says: ‘This calendar hopefully will reach people who are uncomfortable with empowered female nudity, and encourage them to reconsider their feelings about the nude figure.’ Luisa Batista says: ‘I think the calendar is important, because it may help to open people’s eyes and hearts. Women – and men – who are afraid, may find courage and feel supported by the quotes and faces and bodies of the people in the calendar.’ Alena Magelat says: ‘Our naked body is our challenge to patriarchy, dictatorship and violence. Smart people we inspire; dictators are horrified’.

The women in the calendar stand firm in solidarity with Aliaa Magda Elmahdy and the countless women across the world who are denied basic rights, freedoms and dignity.

Join the ‘Scream’ on Facebook and on Twitter under the hashtag #NudePhotoRevolutionary.

  1. Desi_Gurl….

….And do you think that unto such as you,
    A maggot-minded, starved, fanatic crew,
God gave his secret, and denied it me?
Well, well, it matters not. Believe that too.

  2. This has got to be the most stupid article I have ever read. This Maryam Namazie slut can go suck dick who dies this bitch think she is telling that the religion of Islam is wrong by telling women to cover themselves so men won’t look at them by the wring way and so the Muslim women stay on the right path. This asshole who I just mentioned is a fucked up bitch, that’s all I’m going to say. I understand this is a free blog, but after the day of judgement this loser will find out what she’s in for. The Qur’an says thus stuff to help us in our lives ans helps us with our health, mind, and soul. It has suggestions that we should follow Nd make us better people.FUCK YOU MARYAM NAZAMIE

  3. A cheep copy of “calendar girls”…not even esthetic. A protest with a stolen idea. Patent rights say hello to Mrs. Activist.

  4. بسیار خوب موافقم با این ازادی باید ازاد فکر کرد نه اینکه شریعت گفته به خود مشکل ساخت

  5. well being insurance should really only be taken from reputable companies, you really do not would like to get it from fly-by-night companies;;

  6. First you gat to inrease your knowledge about lot of things to clear your CONCEPT.

    (1) Whithout understading Islam, what it says in real, do not blame it.
    (2) Human is not just body, it has ego, emotion, spirit and individual identity in universe.
    (3) If Nudity is freedom, then is it make sense, we live like animals for “absolute freedom”.
    (4) Historical y Men and Women both, cover his body due to 2 reasons, he or she ” FEEL”
not due to the pressure of man on woman or woman on man.

    (5) Nudity is also wrong and bad for Man in Islam, why you blame Islam. Islam gives equality for both.

    1. Taking your points one at a time, as best I can…

      1) It appears you believe the Quran to be right… because it says so. This isn’t an argument, it’s a statement. It’s also wrong. Much is wrong with the Quran and what it says, for all sorts of reasons. It might have been ‘cutting-edge’ in the Iron Age, but not so much these days!

      2) Agree with all you have to say on this… apart from the bit about spirit. Not sure what you mean other than it’s another word for individual consciousness. If you mean the bit of you that goes to heaven, I’d have to disagree with you. Never seen any evidence for ‘spirit’, nor heaven for that matter. If your evidence is ‘because You read it in a book’ then I’m afraid I’m not convinced. If you have any better evidence I think we’d all like to see it!

      3) Taking off your clothes doesn’t make you free… it is, as far as I understand, a statement of freedom from oppression from religious intolerance and religious totalitarians who seek to control us all. Amongst other things, I think those who did the nudity calendar where saying “I can think for myself. I don’t need you to tell me what to do!” I guess you missed that. It might be worth pointing out that taking your clothes off doesn’t make you an animal (in the sense you mean) any more than dressing a goat up in a suit would make it human.

      4) Not sure what you mean here, but you seem to be talking about embarrassment. This usually comes from being seen to be breaking the rules of the group/society. In the jungles of South America, and other places too, people have traditionally gone without clothes. Very uncomfortable and impractical for moving around in a jungle in high levels of heat and with humidity sometimes well over 100%. No embarrassment here!

      5) I think we’d all agree with you that the Quran says that nudity is bad… but that doesn’t make it true. We all came from common ancestors who no doubt had no clothes to start with… unless you believe in Bronze Age myths of men cutting the moon in half with a sword, flying around on winged horses, etc. I’d like to believe that you aren’t that stupid and be able to think of you with intelligence and respect! About the equality… I really don’t think that you can argue that one. Lots of rules telling women that they can’t do things that men can. Not equal at all! I think that’s fairly straight-forward and doesn’t need any explaining?!

      1. Hi Dave Day,

I read your all comments in this Page

I wonder why you are mixing the Nudity , Islam and Qura’an they are a although different sort of things Nudity is personal and doesnt mean to any religion islam is a family of Allah and the Qura’an is a guide , which shows us a path to each and every thing so many words that the whole web and your whole life is not enough to understand

but simply i will tell you one thing which is not an answer nor even a question to you,

the way what you expressed here the things it is not from you and it not acquired by you from your birth maybe some one showed you are told you abt Islam and qura’an

re-check that statement you will know better, you cant justify any thing before knowing it

you know how to read and write because you learn t it ,the same way you learn how to read and write to survive your self in your daily life, the qura’an shows the way how to live and how to respect and one more thing you said abt science it will be pleasure to tell me that each and every thing is mentioned in the qura’an itself then there is no scientist to mention what is space , planets stars and even mathematics, the past , present and the future every thing is there… we muslims have some limitations or else we will show the world where we are heading to and what is our destiny…

well dear i just want to remind you islam is a family and some member’s of the family are in wrong path but we hope they will come back and Allah Guide us to all of us a right path because of them and some Non-Religious people we are facing this we have hope and faith on Al-Might Allah that he will show all of right path and guide us in the remaining life in this world

        1. All your words, and it’s just white noise. You’ve said nothing of much worth or meaning, as far as I can see. Is this what passes for intellectual discourse in the Islamic World these days? I have to say that I’m rather disappointed. Not really worth the time to read. Definitely not worth the time it took for you to write it. Hardly worth responding at all!

        2. Hi Rafay !
What is your qualification? You say Quran has science in it, but can you explain why Muslims are not scientifically advanced.. By the way science is a continuasly evolving knowledge branch.
With your knoldge of Quran can you invent medicine to cure AIDS??,,, Can you create a non-polluting vehicle suitable for goods transport??
Islam is a cult created by Muhammad for his own good. Muhammad didn’t believe in Allah or Quran. There are number of instances in Hadiths where Muhammad has not followed Quran. Pagans were believers in Allah but Muhammad either made them surrender ( Islam) or killed them. There is no Allah, had there been one he would have finished Muhammad and his followers for their crimes on His people.

          1. Assalamu Alaikum,
You think Muslims are scientifically not advanced.Really????????Why dont u search ‘Muslim scientists”on google and get rid of this misconception.Did you even know the fact that the idea of creating universities and granting degrees is an invention of early Muslims in Egypt?
BTW, why does Nepal with 80% hindu population has no significant contribution to the Scientific world other than making those Gurkhas(watch man)???Think about it.
Yes,Quran has science in it.But it is not a science manual. Its Purpose is not to cure AIDs or to create non polluting vehicles.Allah says in Quran that
“O mankind! There hath come to you a direction from your Lord and a Healing for the (diseases) in your hearts. And a Guidance and Mercy for those who believe.” X:57.
Also, AIDS is a living sign of the truthfulness of the Holy Prophet of Islam,Muhammed (PBUH) who made a prophecy about it 1400 years ago. He said:
“Whenever unlawful sexual conduct prevails with a society to the point that they feel no shame in disclosing it and doing it openly, then they shall suffer the Plague and such painful illnesses that their ancestors have never experienced.”(Sunan ibne-Majah, Book of Fitan’: Chapter on Punishment)
Your comment is full of prejudice and ignorance.Pagan Arabs believed in 360+ gods including Allah. So Allah send Muhammed(PBUH) to bring back and finalize the religion of Monotheism in the form of Islam.Muhammed(PBUH) never killed any innocent or forced any one to convert.Neither did he taught so.Because he believed in Allah and followed Quran. Even in the war times he strictly ordered the Muslims
“not to kill woman, children or old people. Don’t kill animals. Don’t destroy property. Don’t destroy non Muslim’s worship places. Don’t cut trees. Don’t fight some one who’s in his house or the door is closed. Don’t kill any one who is not attacking you. If some one (even if he attacked you first) asks for peace then give him peace and dont hurt him. Don’t let personal revenge sway your hearts as Muslims are only allowed to fight for Allah and not for other reasons.” He not only forbids killing innocent humans but also teaches not to kill animals or destroy crops/trees.This shows his love towards all the living things in this world. His teachings are not just good but its the perfect one for the whole world. Hope you understand.

  7. I am greatly encouraged to see the challenge to willful dark-ageism and anti-female politics embodied in these women’s unfurling of their natural bodies. But I was a bit dismayed to see the withering-away of the state of pubic hair revealed to varying degree in every photo in the calendar. Why cede the natural growth of this key aspect of the body’s sexual expression to a postindustrial horror of the human body, with its similacra of prepubescence and worship of antisepcis? To look good at the beach? For whom? Real women, and (do I have to say this? Unfortunately yes) men, have hair. Getting naked should mean showing more of it, not advertising self-imposed, infantilistic baldness.

  8. Animal doesnt wear clothes like you, you are satanic, the prophet has told to the muslim, when the world walk into doomsday, appear kafir person like you. may allah give you guidance

    1. And who gets to choose who is ‘kafir’ and who isn’t? You?

You need to read a bit more than the Quran and broaden your horizons. The Quran isn’t true just because it says so! Look at our universe revealed through the Hubble telescope, or read about how the universe began and what goes on in a black hole. Incredible! Stories of a shepherd hearing angels, flying to heaven on a winged horse… for children and ignorant people who have little understanding!

I’d like to hear from you when you have something intelligent to say!

  9. Only just seen this page;
well done everyone who participated in the calendar: Isn’t it odd that some people think that our bodies, the only thing that really belongs to us (by virtue of the UN declaration of human rights), is something that other people should be able to control? – The control frieks really need to get a life.
The days of slavery, domination of women, forced marriage, fgm etc are numbered. The ugly reality of abuse of power has been exposed.

  10. In reality communism is an extreme form of capitalism
I have never seen any groups more greedy and dictatorial as communists
take a look at china .

  11. Pretty sad that a few perverts out there pretend to blame women’s body for their messed up mind and to justify sexual harassment and assaults on a woman not being covered enough. This is a good initiative but I have no doubt that mentally disturbed people will use it to blame women for whatever consequences could come up out of them seeing someone’s naked body.

    1. I think it a bit unfair to say that people (I assume you mean men) commit acts of sexual harassment against women because they are perverted, and/or mentally ill! To be fair and honest, women too have been known to do their fair share of sexual harassment, though admittedly not in the same numbers.

Let us be really honest, if your Imam or other authority figure tells you for long enough, in strong enough terms that any woman who is not dressed appropriately is a whore and is just dying for you to grope her and have sex, given long enough, you’re going to believe it. That’s ‘brain-washing’, not mental illness!

  12. I commend this work. It is one of the simplest statements one can make but it hits back ferociously. Well done, and may we come to a time where parents teach their sons that they are no better or more deserving than anyone else.
