Hamid Karzai is pardoning Gulnaz, the Afghan woman serving a 12-year prison sentence after she was raped.
But don’t get too excited. He is pardoning her so she can marry her rapist!
According to a statement from the presidential palace, ‘As the both sides [Gulnaz and the rapist] have agreed to get married to each other with conditions, respective authorities were tasked to take action upon it according to Islamic Shariah’.
It doesn’t get more [un]just than that.
The EU’s Ambassador and Special Representative to Afghanistan, Vygaudas Usackas, was ‘delighted’ to hear Gulnaz was to be freed. He went on to say: ‘While we applaud the release of Gulnaz, on the orders of President Karzai, it is the hope of the European Union that the same mercy that has been extended to Gulnaz is applied to all women in similar circumstances.’
Shame on the EU for censoring their own film highlighting Gulnaz’s case and siding with Sharia.
Listen up EU: Women like Gulnaz don’t need ‘mercy’; they need justice and an end to Sharia law.
What a betrayal…
Oh, and for those of you who keep saying ‘it’s their culture,’ it’s not.
According to her lawyer: ‘In my conversations with Gulnaz she told me that if she had the free choice she would not marry the man who raped her’.
It seems like the marriage clause has been dropped. My guess is that a local judge or the police was trying to play dirty games, and Karzai put a stop to it once the case got too much international attention.
